A location that has managed to evoke both intrigue and horror in equal measure is the Bermuda Triangle.

Urban legends suggest that the North Atlantic Ocean, nestled between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico (hence the name Bermuda Triangle), defies standard maritime regulations.

In the Channel 5 program The Bermuda Triangle Enigma, oceanographer Simon Boxall of the University of Southampton argues for the notion of rogue waves. Rogue waves are defined as erratic, furious currents that have the potential to double in size compared to nearby waves.

“There are storms to the south and north, which come together,” Boxall stated.

“And if there are additional ones from Florida, it can be a potentially deadly formation of rogue waves.”

Other experts have proposed that the gulf stream may be the cause, in addition to the rogue wave explanation that has been proposed over the years.
