To combat the fires, additional firefighters and 13 planes were deployed. The situation was dire, necessitating the assistance of 160 soldiers for evacuation efforts.
Despite the tragedy that unfolded during this year’s fireworks display, with firefighters losing their lives or sustaining injuries, their bravery shines through. Even though efforts were made to prevent a repeat of last year’s mishap, the fire proved unconquerable. Prime Minister Antonio Costa acknowledged the firefighters’ gallant efforts, emphasizing that they did everything possible but were ultimately overwhelmed.
