Farmer finds giant egg but what was inside was even more puzzling

When an Australian farmer went to collect his chickens’ daily egg delivery, he experienced the shock of his life.

Three times the size of a typical egg and weighing 6.2 ounces, a huge egg had been deposited by one of his hens.

The babushka egg was produced by a free-range chicken at Stockman’s Eggs in north Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands.

The company’s owner, Scott Stockman, shared a picture of the amazing find his team made at the property. It looks incredibly strange when placed next to an egg of the same size, but what they discovered after they cracked the egg may have been even stranger. The egg contained a second, flawlessly developed egg.

“It’s just incredible actually —to have two perfectly formed eggs together,” Scott told ABC News Australia.

A veterinary sciences expert from Charles Sturt University claimed to have never seen anything like it. The hen must have developed an egg as usual but for some reason didn’t lay it, according to associate professor Raf Freire.

“Then the next day, rather than that egg being laid, like it usually is, what’s happened is that there’s been another ovum released,” he explained.

“That’s come down and then the chicken has somehow decided to make its shell around both the previous day’s egg and the new ovum that’s come down.”

The egg would have been fine to eat, according to the experts, but Scott said they get 50,000 eggs daily so they “didn’t bother eating it.”
