The wedding day is usually a day full of love, laughter and tears of happiness.
These expectations are true for the thousands of weddings that take place every day. But unfortunately, David and Heather Mosher’s wedding was anything but ordinary.
Heather and David felt love at first sight when they met in 2015. They met in a dance class and immediately knew they were meant for each other.
On December 23, 2016, David knelt down and asked Heather if she would marry him. He did so in the relaxed atmosphere under the streetlights while the two rode in a carriage with a horse.
Heather said ‘yes’ happily, but the couple’s great news was overshadowed by particularly bad news.
On the day they got engaged, Heather informed David that the doctors had found a lump in her chest that might be cancerous.
Five days later, she announced the heartbreaking diagnosis: she was suffering from an unusual type of aggressive breast cancer and the diagnosis was far from optimistic.
The two planned to get married on December 30, 2017, but because of the acceleration of cancer development, they realized they would have to get the wedding earlier than planned.
Sometimes the presence of a metastasis can determine the severity of the cancer in the patient. In the case of Heather, the situation did not look good.
And yet, on December 22, 2017, almost a year after Dave proposed her, the big moment arrived. The beautiful wedding took place when Heather was lying on the hospital bed surrounded by friends and family.
“Fate has determined that she will marry her soul mate”, said one of Heather’s best friends, photographer Christina Karas.
Heather’s body was so fragile at this point that her family planned to simply put the wedding dress on her like a blanket.
Eventually, she was able to wear the wedding dress, and so the ceremony began.
And yet, every word, every breath, every movement, was very difficult for Heather. She had a hard time but tried to say her vows..
And those words were her last words.
“It was a miracle”, Christina said.
“Even when she raised her hand and realized she was going to die, she was happy. She just wanted it to be a party”.
“Everyone was crying”, Christina added. “We all knew these were our last moments with her and we would cherish each second forever”.
For David, the day was full of pain and heartache, but most of all, it was full of love.
“She was so beautiful and felt safe”, David said.
“I saw her illness. I saw her pain but she did not give up until she married me. It’s unbelievable how much you are able to love someone”.
Heather took her last breath
Just 18 hours after Heather said ‘yes’, she took her last breath and left earth. She was 31 years at the time of her death.
On December 30, 2017, the day David and Heather planned to get married, Heather’s funeral was held at a local church. This is the same church where they planned to get married.
“It was a very difficult day”, Christina said. “The world has lost a wonderful person”.
Since then Christina has shared photos she took during the wedding. They touched the hearts of people from all over the world.
These were of course heartbreaking moments for everyone, but we are glad that this story can give hope to many people.
It shows how strong love can be, even at the end of things. It’s amazing, the desire that people have to survive when they want to fulfill their dream.
