A group of female athletes sued the NCAA on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Riley Gaines, a former swimmer for the University of Kentucky, headed the group.
The complaint contends that Title IX and the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment are violated by the NCAA’s policy allowing biological males who identify as transgender to participate in women’s sports.
The plaintiffs, who include volleyball players, track athletes, and swimmers, claim that their private rights have been violated as well as that the NCAA’s transgender eligibility restrictions have cost them opportunities.
